International Conference of Production and Sustainable Use of Cement and Concrete

Efficiency of the use of lc3 cement in the production of concrete blocks

The research aims to perform the evaluation of the eco-efficiency of the use of low carbon cement (LC3) in the production of concrete blocks. The results of the study of the economic and social environmental impacts of the production of concrete blocks are shown. The Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) tool is used through the use of the SIMAPRO 7.3 program. The functional units evaluated are the 10 cm block and the 15 cm block made of Low Carbon Cement (LC3) with two alternatives: ternary binder on the replacement of the Portland content by 50% and a 35% replacement of clinker and a 1: 1 and 2: 1 combination of calcined clay - calcium carbonate for each of them.

To assess the economic and environmental feasibility of the functional units, eco-efficiency indicators were calculated according to ISO 14045. The main novelty lies in the eco-efficiency evaluation of the use of LC3 cement in the construction of concrete blocks for construction housing, a procedure that has a flexible nature that allows its adaptability and generalization to other designs of construction technologies. The research has an articulation of different analytical and methodological tools to obtain indicators of eco-efficiency and environmental behavior of concrete block walls produced with low carbon cement.
