3rd Workshop on Internationalization of Higher Education 2023

INTES 2023

International and interdisciplinary research collaboration to examine and address the needs of students around the world involved with juvenile justice

Abstract

Problem: Incarceration as a youth predicts incarceration as an adult (Eren & Mocan, 2021). Research has indicated that providing reentry support to youth minimizes the risk of reincarceration (Kubek et al, 2020). Research has also shown that employment and mentoring support reduce the probability of future criminal activity and the likelihood of recidivism among formerly incarcerated youths (Ochoa et al, 2020). The problem, however, is that many scholars work independently, resulting in fragmented treatment and rehabilitation efforts. Since 2019, the Global Consortium on Juvenile Delinquency and Prevention, an interdisciplinary group of scholars in higher education, has 1) sought to collaborate to understand the risk factors that lead to incarceration and 2) harness the protective factors which can improve the opportunities to reintegrate into society youths who are in conflict with the law.
