Introduction: Aging is a process of progressive changes that affects the functional capacity and the level of dependency in elderly population, affecting their health and their daily activities.
Objective: To characterize the functional capacity of the institutionalized older adults from Santa Clara, Villa Clara.
Method: A quantitative, transectional-descriptive study was carried out. The sample consisted of 45 older adults, with a predominance of males and the age group 75-89 years. The instruments used were the Barthel Index to assess basic activities of daily living (BADL) and the Lawton and Brody Scale for instrumental activities of daily living (IADL).
Results: It was found that for BADL, 97.8% of the sample showed mild dependency, while only 2.2% showed moderate dependency, represented by the male sex and the age group between 75-89 years. The basic activities with greater independence were dressing, grooming and eating. In the IADL, 77.8% of the total was independent and 22.2% showed functional dependence, represented by the male sex and the age group between 75-89 years. The highest frequencies of independence were found in the activities of using the telephone and taking care of the house.
Conclusions: It was found that in institutionalized older adults the functionally independent predominate to carry out both BADL and IADL.
Introducción: El envejecimiento es un proceso de cambios progresivos que repercute en la capacidad funcional y el nivel de dependencia de la población adulta mayor, afectando su salud y sus actividades cotidianas.
Objetivo: Caracterizar la capacidad funcional de los adultos mayores institucionalizados de Santa Clara, Villa Clara.
Método: Se realizó un estudio cuantitativo, de tipo transeccional-descriptivo. La muestra estuvo constituida por 45 adultos mayores, con predominio del sexo masculino y el grupo de edad 75-89 años. Los instrumentos empleados fueron el Índice de Barthel para evaluar las actividades básicas de vida diaria (ABVD) y la Escala de Lawton y Brody para las actividades instrumentales de vida diaria (AIVD).
Resultados: Se encontró que para las ABVD el 97.8% de la muestra evidenció dependencia leve, mientras solo el 2.2% manifestó dependencia moderada, representado por el sexo masculino y el grupo de edad comprendido entre 75-89 años. Las actividades básicas con mayor independencia fueron vestirse, arreglarse y comer. En las AIVD, el 77.8% del total resultó independiente y el 22.2% mostró dependencia funcional, representado por el sexo masculino y el grupo de edad comprendido entre 75-89años. Las mayores frecuencias de independencia se encontraron en las actividades de usar el teléfono y cuidado de la casa.
Conclusiones: Se encontró que en los adultos mayores institucionalizados predominan los funcionalmente independientes para llevar a cabo tanto las ABVD como las AIVD.
