XVI International Workshop “Communities: History and Development 2025” "Comunidades 2025"

XVI International Workshop “Communities: History and Development 2025”

Comunidades 2025

The Center for Community Studies, committed to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals and in light of the challenges posed by the implementation of the 2030 Agenda, calls for the XVI International Workshop “Communities: History and Development” to be held within the framework of the V International Scientific Convention of the “Marta Abreu” Central University of Las Villas, between October 20 and 24, 2025.

For more than three decades, we have served as a platform for professionals from various countries to meet to build new knowledge around the community and the community as an alternative to an increasingly globalized, polarized and fragmented society.

Contemporary society, however, proposes new realities that blur the traditional ways we live and socialize. Easy access to information, cyberspace, social networks and artificial intelligence offers us a (i)reality that has put the historical logic of the community in crisis and that has revolutionized social practices and values, posing new opportunities and challenges for social engineering, social work, social services, organizations and institutions and governance.

Are we witnessing a community crisis?

In the face of capitalist individualization, selfishness and the ruthless competition of the market of economic development models, we maintain that building community is a viable alternative for the democratization and sustainability of life based on ideals of equality, inclusion and social justice.

Convinced of this, we focused our debate on the importance of social innovation as a source of development for the achievement of the community social integrations in the contemporary society from a transdisciplinary approach that makes it possible to broaden the horizon of discussion towards political, economic, cultural, labour, environmental, demographic, gender, among others, mediations; and its expression in the various aspects of daily social praxis, giving special attention to the role of participation and cooperation of social subjects for emancipatory social transformation , assumed in a community key.
