Procedure for the structural evaluation of asphalt pavements in Cuba

Abstract

The structural evaluation of asphalt pavements to determine the need for structural reinforcement is of great importance in an adequate conservation strategy, Cuba does not have a procedure for the structural evaluation of asphalt pavements, hence the proposal of a procedure for it, based on of the results of the non-destructive test with Benkelman beam and the interpretation of the deflections measured on the surface of a pavement, applying the Hogg model, which expresses the state of the pavement through the capacity of the subgrade California Bearing Ratio (CBR) and the relationship effective structural number and structural number required to determine the need for structural reinforcement, from this a sequence of logical steps is derived that allows the structural evaluation of asphalt pavements for Cuba, which makes it possible to define the locations where structural reinforcement is necessary, allocate material and financial resources to those with the greatest effects, enabling substantial savings.

Resumen

La evaluación estructural de pavimentos asfalticos para determinar la necesidad de refuerzo estructural, tiene gran importancia en una estrategia de conservación adecuada, Cuba no dispone de un procedimiento para la evaluación estructural de pavimentos asfálticos, de aquí la propuesta de un procedimiento para ello, a partir de los resultados del ensayo no destructivo con viga Benkelman y la interpretación de las deflexiones medidas en la superficie de un pavimento, aplicando el modelo de Hogg, que expresa el estado del pavimento a través de la capacidad de la subrasante California Bearing Ratio (CBR) y la relación número estructural efectivo y numero estructural requerido para determinar la necesidad del refuerzo estructural, de esto se deriva una secuencia de pasos lógicos que permite la evaluación estructural de pavimentos asfalticos para Cuba, lo que posibilita definir los logares donde es necesario el refuerzo estructural, destinar los recursos materiales y financieros hacia los de mayores efectos, posibilitando ahorros sustanciales.
