The greatest challenge for specialists who care for children with suicidal behavior and their families is in the psychological evaluation of the relationship between these categories. Research evidence shows that a unidirectional perspective of this relationship predominates, where family functioning is valued as a determinant of suicidal behaviors. However, another group of studies confirms that the relationship is bidirectional, and that childhood suicidal behaviors also impact the dynamics of families, imposing the need to manage new, more educational coping. It is based on these results that this article describes a group of theoretical-methodological considerations for the evaluation of family functioning in children with suicidal behavior. Considerations that are relevant and applicable in medical and educational services dedicated to the care of children with this health problem and their families.
El mayor reto de los especialistas que atienen a niños con conducta suicida y sus familias, está en la evaluación psicológica de la relación entre estas categorías. Las evidencias investigativas demuestran que predomina una perspectiva unidireccional de esta relación, donde se valora al funcionamiento familiar como determinante de las conductas suicidas. Sin embargo, otro grupo de estudios confirma que la relación es bidireccional, y que las conductas suicidas infantiles también impactan en la dinámica de las familias, imponiendo la necesidad de gestionar nuevos afrontamientos más educativos. Es a partir de estos resultados, que en el presente artículo se describen un grupo de consideraciones teórico-metodológicas para la evaluación del funcionamiento familiar en niños con conducta suicida. Consideraciones que resultan pertinentes y aplicables en los servicios médicos y educativos dedicados a la atención de niños con este problema de salud y sus familias.
