Informational Brochure: Medicinal Plants Contraindicated During Breastfeeding.

Abstract:
Problem: The use of medicinal plants by the population is on the rise, fueled by the limited availability of conventional medicines. Women are the largest consumers of these resources. There is a false belief that because they are natural, these remedies do not produce adverse effects. Many herbs should be avoided during breastfeeding, as they could harm the baby if passed into breast milk.
Objective: Design an informational brochure for the general public on medicinal plants that are contraindicated during breastfeeding.
Methodology: The historical-logical method, analysis, and synthesis were used; bibliographic searches and consultations were conducted. Databases such as Latindex, Scopus, Scielo, Dialnet, PubMed, and Lilacs were reviewed, and scientific articles from the last five years, in Spanish and English, were included. Table work was conducted, and the plants to be included were defined. Microsoft Office Publisher was used for the design.
Results and Discussion: An informational brochure was designed that met the requirements proposed by the Pan American Health Organization for patient information materials. Twenty-one plants were covered, including their common and scientific names, a photograph for easy identification, the main reasons for not recommending their use, and recommendations.
Conclusions: An easy-to- hanle, clearly designed resource has been developed, containing key information to prevent the occurrence of adverse effects in infants due to the use of medicinal plants and their preparations during lactation.

Problemática: La utilización de plantas medicinales por la población tiene una tendencia creciente, lo que se ha visto potenciado por la poca disponibilidad de medicamentos convencionales. Las mujeres son las mayores consumidoras de estos recursos. Existe la falsa creencia de que por ser naturales, estos remedios no producen efectos adversos. Durante el período de lactancia numerosas hierbas deben ser evitadas, al pasar a la leche materna podrían afectar al bebé.
Objetivo: Diseñar un folleto informativo dirigido a la población, sobre plantas medicinales contraindicadas durante el periodo de lactancia.
Metodología: Se emplearon el método histórico-lógico, el análisis y síntesis; se acudió a la búsqueda y la consulta bibliográfica. Se revisaron bases de datos Latindex, Scopus, Scielo, Dialnet, PubMed, Lilacs y se incluyeron artículos científicos de los últimos 5 años, en español e inglés. Se llevó a cabo un trabajo de mesa y se definieron las plantas a incluir. Para el diseño se utilizó el Microsoft Office Publisher.
Resultados y discusión: Se diseñó un folleto informativo que cumplió con los requisitos propuestos por la Organización Panamericana de la Salud para los materiales de información a pacientes. Se abordaron 21 plantas, se expusieron nombre común, nombre científico, una fotografía para facilitar la identificación, las principales razones por las que se desaconseja el uso y recomendaciones.
Conclusiones: Queda diseñado un material, de fácil manejo y comprensión; con información útil para prevenir la aparición de efectos indeseados en el bebé, por el uso de plantas medicinales y sus preparados durante la lactancia.
