Development of a Cuban standard for Portland limestone cement, an essential step for the production of this cement.

Abstract

As part of the strategy to diversify cement production in the country, the introduction of Portland limestone cement is planned. The production of this cement is common internationally with presence in both European (EN standards) and American (ASTM) regulations. The introduction in the country of the production of cement with the addition of limestone requires the establishment of chemical, physical and mechanical requirements that guarantee the quality of this product, the safety of people and facilitate trade. International regulations allow additions to be incorporated in cement production. However, in Cuba quality specifications have not been established for the production of Portland limestone cement, which constitutes the problem to be solved in this work.

The European standard EN 197-1 refers to the family of common cements, which are grouped into five main types. In the CEM II family is Portland Cement with limestone. The ASTM C-595 standard defines the specifications of mixed cements and establishes 4 types of cement, type IL corresponds to Portland limestone cement. These standards define the percentages of addition, establish the chemical, physical and mechanical requirements for this type of cement, as well as the requirements that limestone must meet as an addition.

This work presents the development of the Cuban standard for Portland limestone cement that culminated in its approval by the National Standardization Office with the NC code 1413:2023.

Resumen

Como parte de la estrategia de diversificación de la producción de cemento en el país se prevé la introducción del cemento portland calizo. La producción de este cemento es común a nivel internacional con presencia en la normativa tanto europea (normas EN) como estadounidense (ASTM). La introducción en el país de la producción de cemento con adición de caliza requiere el establecimiento de los requisitos químicos, físicos y mecánicos que garanticen la calidad de este producto, la seguridad de las personas y faciliten el comercio. La normativa internacional permite incorporar adiciones en la producción de cemento. Sin embargo, en Cuba no se han establecido las especificaciones de calidad para la producción del cemento portland calizo, lo que constituye el problema a resolver en este trabajo.

En la norma europea EN 197-1 refiere la familia de los cementos comunes, que se agrupan en cinco tipos principales, en la familia del CEM II se encuentra el Cemento Portland con caliza. En la norma ASTM C-595 se definen las especificaciones de los cementos mezclados y se establecen 4 tipos de cemento, en tipo IL corresponde al Cemento Portland calizo. En estas normas se definen los por cientos de adición, se establecen los requisitos químicos, físicos y mecánicos para este tipo de cemento, así como los requisitos que debe cumplir la caliza como adición.

Este trabajo presenta el desarrollo de la norma cubana para el cemento portland calizo que culminó en su aprobación por la Oficina Nacional de Normalización con el código NC 1413:2023.
