Open education: a challenge for Cuban higher education

Abstract

The concept and characteristics of Open Education constitute an inexorable trend for the renewal and development of higher education. The work includes the main conceptualizations and characteristics regarding Open Education, issued by the main researchers on the subject in different regions of the world. At the same time, it aims to become a reflection tool for teachers and managers interested in innovation and modernization of education. On the other hand, the methodology used was documentary analysis. Among the main results of the work we find coincidences that Open Education reforms and perfects education. Furthermore, the use of new technologies, Open Educational Resources, the free and open source software movement have been and are essential for the development of Open Education.

Resumen

El concepto y las características de la Educación Abierta constituyen una tendencia inexorable para la renovación y desarrollo de la educación superior. En el trabajo se incluyen las principales conceptualizaciones y características respecto a la Educación Abierta, emitidas por los principales investigadores del tema en diferentes regiones del mundo. A su vez, tiene como objetivo convertirse en una herramienta de reflexión para profesores y gestores interesados en la innovación y modernización de la educación. Por otra parte, la metodología utilizada fue el análisis documental. Dentro de los principales resultados del trabajo encontramos coincidencias en que la Educación Abierta reforma y perfecciona la educación. Además, el uso de las nuevas tecnologías, los Recursos Educativos Abiertos, el movimiento de software libre y de código abierto han sido y son esenciales para el desarrollo de la Educación Abierta.
