Combination of recycled materials (RAP and CDW) to obtain a fraction of aggregates for asphalt mixtures.

Abstract

The use of Construction and Demolition Waste (CDW) in pavements can be a viable solution to preserve the consumption of natural aggregates (NA) and minimize the negative environmental impact caused by the deposition of this waste in landfills. Into this classification are the construction waste, the industrial processes waste; as well as the milled material from the pavement conservation works. With the use of CDW, recycled aggregates such as concrete (RCA), ceramic, mixed or from the recycling of asphalt pavements (RAP) can be obtained. In order to use recycled aggregates in hot asphalt mixtures, the characteristics of three sources of RCA and two of RAP in the coarse fraction (5-10mm) are evaluated; In addition, both materials were combined to achieve a fraction of recycled aggregates RCA/RAP (0/100, 25/75, 50/50, 75/25, 100/0). For the analysis, a microstructural and mineralogical study of the RCA was carried out and the moisture content and asphalt were determined at the RAP. In the research, properties such as specific weight, absorption, content of flat and elongated particles and material finer than the No. 200 sieve were analyzed in the combinations studied, resulting in the combinations with the best performance being 25/75 and 50 /50.
