Stabilization of subgrade clay soils with the addition of recycled glass.

Abstract

An investigation is presented in this work, the results obtained due to the addition of ground glass obtained by recycling to a sub-grade clay soil of the City of Santiago de Cuba. The soil classified as A-7-6 (5). It was characterized with the tests of limits of consistency, grain size distribution, Proctor, CBR and direct shear resistance. The samples for physical tests were taken directly from the road, however, in the case of the samples to determine the resistance to direct shear, they were re-molded in the laboratory for the optimum moisture content obtained in the standard Proctor test, applying vertical pressure of 0.5, 1 and 1.5 kg / cm2. The CBR was carried out for the submerged condition with samples compacted to the optimum humidity of the Proctor. The glass was also characterized by grain size distribution.
The ground glass was added to the soil in percent by weight of 4, 8 and 12%. Proctor and direct shear tests were carried out to evaluate the influence of this additive on the resistance and dry density parameters of the analyzed soil. The obtained results indicate that the addition of ground glass produces a favorable increase in the resistance parameters of the soil, making it a material with better bearing capacity under loads than in its initial condition.
