Artistic performance in feminist social struggles. The case of Ana Mendieta, Regina José Galindo, Zanele Muholi and Sigalit Landau

The concept of feminism, as well as the struggles for emancipation and the realization of gender equality that are equated with it, date from the second half of the 20th century. The original definitions of the phenomenon are located in regions of power, say the West. However, its direct materialization and the sharpest interpretation has been made from the periphery areas: Latin America, Africa and the Middle East. In this context are four artists whose works have marked a cultural space turned into a trench of feminist struggle. Ana Mendieta (Cuba-United States), Regina José Galindo (Guatemala), Zanele Muholi (South Africa) and Sigalit Landau (Jerusalem), in addition to other artistic manifestations, practice performances to denounce the crimes and humiliations to which women are subjected around the world, victims of heteropatriarchy. Mendieta, Galindo, Muholi and Landau use their own bodies or that of other women to better explain their fighting intentions.

This research focuses on the critical appraisal of her works and the validity of their permanence in the artistic field used by current feminist movements around the world. The catalog of photographs of the representations that appear on the website of each artist was taken as a sample, and a thematic decantation was made. The exploration of the works of these artists allows us to demonstrate the social impact that performance has in denouncing abuse.

El concepto de feminismo, así como las luchas por la emancipación y la concreción de la equidad de género que vienen equiparadas a él, datan de la segunda mitad del siglo XX. Las definiciones primigenias del fenómeno se ubican en regiones de poder, dígase Occidente. Sin embargo, su materialización directa y la interpretación más aguda se ha hecho desde las zonas de la periferia: América Latina, África y Oriente Medio. En este contexto se sitúan cuatro artistas cuyas obras han marcado un espacio cultural convertido en trinchera de lucha feminista. Ana Mendieta (Cuba-Estados Unidos), Regina José Galindo (Guatemala), Zanele Muholi (Sudáfrica) y Sigalit Landau (Jerusalén), además de otras manifestaciones artísticas, practican la performance para denunciar los crímenes y vejaciones a las que son sometidas las mujeres alrededor del mundo, víctimas del heteropatriarcado. Mendieta, Galindo, Muholi y Landau utilizan su propio cuerpo o el de otras mujeres para explicitar de una mejor manera sus intenciones de lucha.

Esta investigación se centra en la valoración crítica de sus obras y la validez de su permanencia en el ámbito artístico que utilizan los movimientos feministas actuales, alrededor del mundo. Se tomó como muestra el catálogo de fotografías de las representaciones que aparecen en la página web de cada artista, y se realizó una decantación temática. La exploración de las obras de estas artistas permite demostrar el impacto social que tiene la performance en la delación del maltrato.
