DEVELOPING ENGLISH READING SKILLS AT LEVEL A2 THROUGH TEXTS DEALING WITH CROSS-CURRICULAR CONTENTS

Cuban university graduates are expected to read and understand information from books and other materials written in English. Therefore, they should develop skills to understand different kind of texts. In the placement test given to university students at the beginning of the academic year, it was observed that students majoring in Pedagogy and Psychology Teacher Education have various limitations in reading skills, and they have not reached Level A2. The present study has as general objective to propose a booklet of texts with exercises dealing with cross curricular contents to develop English reading skills at Level A2 in students majoring in Pedagogy and Psychology Teacher Education at Universidad Central “Marta Abreu” de Las Villas. Different theoretical (logical-historical, analytic-synthetic, inductive-deductive, and systemic approach), empirical (document analysis, observation, interview, pedagogical test, specialist’s criteria and triangulation), and statistical and/or mathematical scientific methods were used. The proposal was assessed as very adequate by the specialists’ criteria.

Los graduados universitarios cubanos deben ser capaces de leer y entender información de libros y otros materiales escritos en inglés. Por lo tanto, ellos deben desarrollar habilidades para entender diferentes tipos de textos. En los exámenes de colocación realizados a los estudiantes universitarios al principio del curso académico se observó que los estudiantes de Educación Pedagogía y Psicología tienen serias limitaciones en las habilidades de lectura, y no han alcanzado el nivel A2. El presente estudio tiene como objetivo general proponer un folleto de textos y ejercicios relacionados con contenidos cross-curriculares para desarrollar habilidades de lectura a nivel A2 en los estudiantes de Educación Pedagogía y Psicología en la Universidad Central “Marta Abreu” de las Villas. Diferentes métodos del nivel teórico (histórico-lógico, análisis-síntesis, inductivo-deductivo), empíricos (análisis de documentos, observación, entrevista, prueba pedagógica, criterio de especialista y triangulación), y estadísticos y/o matemáticos fueron usados. La propuesta fue evaluada como muy adecuada por criterio de especialistas.
