Vocabulary in Western documents of the Cuban wars for independence: clues to explain identities

Abstract

The line of research seeks data about the formation of the Cuban variety of the language, specifically lexicons, that allow us to visualize the map of the identities that are formed around the wars of independence. The most frequent lexico-semantic fields and the presence of Americanisms, Cubanisms and singularizing loans have been observed in the stripped documents, which include experiences, narratives, impressions and reflections on events and characters participating in the war in the time period between 1868 and 1898. Beyond the predominance of the heritage lexicon, emphasis is placed on the amounts and nature of the lexification processes, which outline the identities of its actors, in which modification and creation predominate.

Resumen

La línea investigativa procura datos acerca de la formación de la variedad cubana de la lengua, específicamente léxicos, que permitan ir visualizando el mapa de las identidades que se conforman alrededor de las guerras de independencia. Se ha observado los campos lexicosemánticos más frecuentes y la presencia de americanismos, cubanismos y préstamos singularizadores en los documentos despojados, que comprenden vivencias, narraciones, impresiones y reflexiones sobre hechos y personajes participantes de la contienda bélica en el período temporal entre 1868 y 1898. Más allá del predominio del léxico patrimonial, se insiste en los montos y la índole de los procesos de lexificación, que nos dibujan las identidades de sus actores, en que predominan la modificación y la creación.
