Abstract
Problems: The Dominican Republic, like other countries, faces environmental problems as a result of the negative impacts suffered by the planet, as a result of the inadequate use of natural resources, as well as the services offered by different ecosystems, including urban forests (BU) and peri-urban forests (PU). Therefore, environmental education (EE) needs to be rigorously implemented in society, and the best way is to do it from school. One of the most successful options to create this link is through the principle of participatory citizen science (CCP).
• Objective(s): Conduct a systematic review of the literature published between the years 2010-2023 on the study of participatory citizen science and the role of the school in the evaluation of the ecosystem services of urban and peri-urban forests.
• Methodology: The keywords used were urban and peri-urban forests, participatory citizen science, environmental education, ecosystem services, both in Spanish and English.
• Results and discussion: Of the total articles, the 61 most relevant, considered by the authors, were included. The methodologies implemented in the studies were both qualitative (survey) and quantitative (software and statistical methods).
• Conclusions: Through the concept of participatory citizen science, it has been possible to bring science closer to society, train and enable citizens to participate in projects, attitudes and values that are related to care and respect for the environment, which has become an important resource for the implementation, in a significant way, of environmental education.
Resumen
• Problemática: República Dominicana, al igual que otros países, enfrenta y problemas ambientales a raíz de los impactos negativos que sufre el planeta, producto del uso inadecuado de los recursos naturales, así como los servicios que nos ofrecen los diferentes ecosistemas, entre ellos los bosques urbanos (BU) y periurbanos (PU). De modo que, se necesita implementar de forma rigurosa la educación ambiental (EA) en la sociedad, y la mejor manera es hacerlo desde la escuela. Una de las opciones más acertada para crear ese vínculo es a través del principio de ciencia ciudadana participativa (CCP).
• Objetivo(s): Realizar una revisión sistemática de la literatura publicada entre los años 2010-2023 sobre el estudio de ciencia ciudadana participativa y el rol de la escuela en la evaluación de los servicios ecosistémicos de los bosques urbanos y periurbanos.
• Metodología: Las palabras claves empleadas fueron bosques urbanos y periurbanos, ciencia ciudadana participativa, educación ambiental, servicios ecosistémicos, tanto en español como en inglés.
• Resultados y discusión: Del total de los artículos se incluyeron los 61 más relevantes, considerados por los autores. Las metodologías implementadas en los estudios fueron tanto cualitativas (encuesta) como cuantitativas (softwares y métodos estadísticos).
• Conclusiones: A través del concepto de ciencia ciudadana participativa se ha logrado acercar la ciencia a la sociedad, formar y capacitar a ciudadanos para que participen en proyectos, actitudes y valores que se relacionan con el cuidado y respeto al medio ambiente, lo cual la ha hecho un recurso importante para la implementación, de manera significativa, de la educación ambiental.
