·           Problem: The absence of a comprehensive management plan endangers the sustainability of its natural resources and biodiversity in the Nigua River. In this sense, the disordered growth of the population, the change in land use, environmental contamination and the indiscriminate extraction of aggregates are important effects that reveal the environmental deterioration of recent decades.

·           Objective: Describe and analyze the environmental situation in the Nigua basin over the last 10 years to understand the challenges faced by the sectors involved and guide environmental governance actions that promote the sustainable use of water resources. 

·           Methodology: A systematic analysis and review of content from various secondary sources, including scientific articles, books, legal texts, and research reports, was conducted using computer search engines to identify keywords. The description of the environmental situation in the surface area of the basin was carried out qualitatively through a field survey, supported by satellite images, information processors, and the base cartography provided by the Ministry of the Environment and the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources (INDRHI). This support helped specify the data and facilitate digital processing.

·           Results and Discussion: In the Nigua territory, there is a growing deterioration of its natural resources, leading to increased environmental conflicts daily, driven by the demand for ecosystem services in its physiography. Notably, the absence of government programs that are coordinated with key actors in the basin, coupled with a lack of integrated and sustained plans for the territory within the political agenda.

·           Conclusions: The implementation of an integrated management proposal for the Nigua basin that involves key actors in the territory could promote environmental governance and channel actions in favor of sustainable development of the basin for the sustainable use of water.
