Development of a tooling for the manufacture of components for elution assemblies for 99mTc / 99Mo generators

Abstract

The technical and economic benefits of the use of radiotracers have been recognized worldwide by the industrial sector; however, this technique continues to be underutilized, not only in countries that do not have facilities to produce radionuclides, but also in those where the necessary equipment and its timely availability are lacking. This paper presents the conceptual design and fabrication of the tooling necessary to obtain the components of the elution assemblies of 99mTc / 99Mo generators. Technetium 99m is the most widely used radioisotope for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes in nuclear medicine. It can bind to a number of specific molecules, making it possible to diagnose many diseases, including certain types of cancer. Its implementation is justified due to the high costs of the components necessary for the development of elutions in patients, the difficulties in importing this equipment, and the impact and sensitivity it has on the health of patients.  In order to respond to this problem, first a bibliographic review of the advances obtained worldwide regarding these issues is carried out. The calculations and designs of a set of cutting, bending and sharpening devices are developed, together with the plastic injection molds, which allow obtaining the necessary accessories for the correct execution of the elutions. Through the use of this tooling, the importation of needles for the elutions is substituted, reducing foreign currency expenses, guaranteeing technological sovereignty and opening possibilities for exportation.
