The Impact of Social Media on Contemporary Literature: Microfiction, Digital Poetry, and Instagram Literature
Set Favorite

Abstract:

This study analyzes how social media has transformed the creation and dissemination of contemporary literature, focusing on three emerging forms: microfiction, digital poetry, and literature published on platforms such as Instagram. The main objective is to identify changes in the structure, style, and reception of literary texts within the digital environment. The methodology involved a documentary review of literary works shared on social media between 2018 and 2025, analysis of digital authors’ profiles, surveys of frequent readers of literary content on platforms like Instagram and Twitter (now X), as well as interviews with writers who have transitioned from traditional formats to digital ones. The results reveal a steady growth in the production of short, visually engaging texts designed to be consumed quickly, emotionally, and interactively. This literature relies on visual elements such as images, colors, and typography to enhance its impact, marking a break from traditional editorial models and offering greater creative freedom and visibility for emerging authors. The discussion suggests that these digital formats do not weaken literature; rather, they expand its reach and democratize access, enabling new forms of connection with readers. In conclusion, social media has created an innovative literary ecosystem where words, images, and audience participation converge, profoundly redefining the literary experience in the 21st century.
