The objective of this research is to describe how, in the novel La Pell Freda (Cold Skin), by the Catalan writer Albert Sánchez Piñol, the forms of humanity can provoke expressions of subjective journeys that end in reactions and behaviors that de-automatize the concept of “human.” The theme of this study is the concept of “human” and its different cultural expressions: anti-, pan-, meta-, trans-, and posthuman. Literary theory and criticism, along with other scientific disciplines, have found fertile ground for polemics on a topic as old as the world itself: the characteristics that make us human. The semantic shift suffered by many concepts and categories associated with "the human" or "humanity" is analyzed in this research. Likewise, the reader's attempt to interpret cultural identity, when the very concept of “human” is shaken, rewritten, or erased, makes emerging narratives increasingly heterodox and controversial, often with dystopian or apocalyptic proposals. Therefore, transdisciplinary theoretical readings are required that, from different schools and models, can shed light on these meta-questions. La Pell Freda (Cold Skin) serves as a provocation for discussion within the critical literature and a revisit to some accepted literary motifs, while proposing other perspectives that may also be valid for describing the identity, cultural, metacognitive, and semantic shifts of "the human." Like Defoe's Robinson Crusoe, La Pell Freda takes place on a seemingly deserted island, where characters, subjected to exceptional conditions, react in a predisposing way, fostering confrontation: civilization vs. barbarism; human vs. beast. This long-standing literary trope in universal culture forces us, in the 21st century, to rethink the future of the species and of the marginalized or displaced identities that emerge in extreme situations.
El objetivo de la investigación es describir cómo en la novela La pell freda (La piel fría), del escritor catalán Albert Sánchez Piñol, las formas de humanidad pueden suscitar expresiones de viajes subjetivos que concluyen en reacciones y comportamientos que desautomatizan el concepto de “humano”. El presente estudio tiene como tema el concepto de humano y sus diferentes expresiones culturales: anti-, pan-, meta-, trans- y poshumano. La teoría y la crítica literaria, al amparo de otras disciplinas científicas, han encontrado un terreno fértil para polemizar sobre un tema tan antiguo como el propio mundo: las características que nos convierten en seres humanos. El desplazamiento semántico que sufren muchos conceptos y categorías asociadas “lo humano” o “la humanidad” son analizadas en la investigación. De la misma manera, el intento lectoris de la identidad cultural, cuando el propio concepto “humano” se tambalea, es reescrito o se somete a borradura, hace que las narrativas emergentes sean cada vez más heterodoxas y polémicas al respecto, con propuestas muchas veces distópicas o apocalípticas. Se imponen, pues, lecturas teóricas transdisciplinares que, desde diferentes escuelas y modelos puedan arrojar luz a estos metacuestionamientos. La pell freda (La piel fría) sirve de provocación para discutir con la bibliografía crítica y revisitar algunos motivos literarios aceptados como válidos, mientras se proponen otras miradas que también pueden resultar válidas para describir los desplazamientos identitarios, culturales, matacognitivos y semánticos de “lo humano”. Como en su momento el Robinson Crusoe, de Defoe, La pell freda transcurre en una isla en apariencia desierta y en la que concurren personajes que, sometidos a condiciones excepcionales, predisponiendo reaccionan propiciando el enfrentamiento: civilización vs. barbarie; humano vs. bestia. Este tópico literario bien antiguo en la cultura universal, hace que nos replanteamos en pleno siglo XXI el futuro de la especie y de las identidades marginales o desplazadas que emergen en situaciones extremas.
