Preliminary analysis of the geochemical behavior of the species ( Pb and Cd) in soils surrounding the Placetas Auriferous Mineral Processing Plant.

Abstract

The present work consists in the study of the geochemical behavior of the species (Pb and Cd) in soils adjacent to the Gold Mine Processing Plant of Placetas by sorption tests with discontinuous flow. To determine the influence on the retention and mobility of the species of interest, these soils were characterized by their chemical properties, finding neutral and slightly alkaline pH values, high content of organic matter, and conductivity values between 150-300 μS/cm. The wastewater on the other hand showed high contents of Ni (80 mg/L), Co (4 mg/L), Zn (0.27 mg/L), Cu (1.15 mg/L), Pb (7 mg/L), Cd (0.04 mg/L). Finally the retention was evaluated by means of adsorption isotherms: Freundlich, Langmuir and BET and the kinetic study showing that the results for each metal in each type of soil are adjusted to the pseudo second order model and to the Langmuir isotherm respectively.

Resumen

El presente trabajo consiste en el estudio del comportamiento geoquímico de las especies (Pb y Cd) en suelos aledaños a la Planta de Procesamiento de Minerales Auríferos de Placetas mediante ensayos de sorción con flujo discontinuo. Para determinar la influencia en la retención y movilidad de las especies de interés estos suelos fueron caracterizados por sus propiedades químicas, encontrando valores de pH neutros y ligeramente alcalinos, alto contenido de materia orgánica, y valores de conductividad entre 150-300 µS/cm. Las aguas residuales por su parte mostraron elevados contenidos de níquel (80 mg/L), cobalto (4 mg/L), zinc (0,27 mg/L), cobre (1,15 mg/L), plomo (7 mg/L), cadmio (0,04 mg/L). Finalmente la retención fue evaluada mediante isotermas de adsorción: Freundlich, Langmuir y BET y el estudio cinético mostrando que los resultados para cada metal en cada tipo de suelo se ajustan al modelo de pseudo segundo orden y a la isoterma de Langmuir respectivamente.
