Aerodynamic study of small vertical axis wind turbine using Computational Fluid Mechanics techniques

Abstract

The paper contains the aim is to study through Computational Fluid Mechanics (CFD) the aerodynamic characteristics of small Vertical Axis Wind Turbines (VAWT), testing 2D wind rotor geometries using software, using the computing capacity of the UCLV cluster (HPC-UCLV) to find an approximation of the Power Coefficient (Cp) curve with respect to the Specific Speed or Speed Ratio (TSR). With OpenFOAM7 on HPC it is possible to test a Darrieus rotor for which there is experimental data and an approximation of the Cp vs TSR curves is obtained, the results are compared.

Resumen

El objetivo del artículo es estudiar mediante Mecánica de Fluidos Computacional (CFD) las características aerodinámicas de pequeños aerogeneradores de eje vertical (VAWT), probando geometrías 2D de rotores eólicos mediante software, utilizando la capacidad de cálculo del cluster UCLV (HPC-UCLV) para encuentre una aproximación de la curva del Coeficiente de Potencia (Cp) con respecto a la Velocidad Específica o Relación de Velocidad (TSR). Con OpenFOAM7 sobre HPC se puede probar un rotor Darrieus del cual se tienen datos experimentales y se obtiene una aproximación de las curvas Cp vs TSR, se comparan los resultados.
