Phytochemestry and pharmacology of hydroalcoholic extract of Jatropha gossypifolia L

Abstract

Introduction: One of the plants that has increased in interest today is Jatropha gossypifolia L. Several studies carried out on the plant, especially the leaves, have shown that it has an enormous phytochemical reserve that may be responsible for many reported pharmacological activities. . Objective: To deepen the phytochemical and pharmacological knowledge of the hydroalcoholic extract and the fractions obtained from the leaves Jatropha gossypifolia L. Materials and Methods: The fractionation was developed from the hydroalcoholic extract and the subsequent evaluation of the analgesic activity in vivo of the fractions obtained from J. gossypifolia L. by the acetic acid-induced writhing test. Results: The pharmacognostic study carried out on the leaves of Jatropha gossypifolia L. allowed the establishment of quality specifications in accordance with the requirements established by the WHO and Cuban standards for plant drugs. Furthermore, the liquid-liquid extraction method using water in an acid medium achieved the separation of quinones present in the chloroform extract of this species. The extract and fractions obtained from the leaves of Jatropha gossypifolia L. showed an analgesic effect in the acetic acid-induced writhing test. Conclusions: Fractionation of the extract allowed obtaining fractions with analgesic activity

Resumen

Introducción: Una de las plantas que ha aumentado en interés en la actualidad es Jatropha gossypifolia L. Varios estudios desarrollados a la planta, en especial a las hojas, han demostrado que esta posee una enorme reserva fitoquímica que puede ser responsables de muchas actividades farmacológicas reportadas. Objetivo: Profundizar en el conocimiento fitoquímico y farmacológico del extracto hidroalcohólico y las fracciones obtenidas de las hojas Jatropha gossypifolia L. Materiales y Métodos: Se desarrolló el fraccionamiento a partir del extracto hidroalcohólico y la posterior evaluación de la actividad analgésica in vivo de las fracciones obtenidas de J. gossypifolia L. mediante el ensayo de contorsiones inducidas por ácido acético. Resultados: El estudio farmacognóstico realizado a las hojas de Jatropha gossypifolia L. permitió establecer las especificaciones de calidad de acuerdo con los requisitos establecidos por la OMS y las normas cubanas para drogas vegetales. Además el método de extracción liquído-liquído con el empleo de agua en medio ácido logró la separación de quinonas presentes en el extracto clorofórmico de esta especie. El extracto y las fracciones, obtenidas a partir de las hojas de Jatropha gossypifolia L. mostraron un efecto analgésico en el ensayo de contorsiones inducidas por ácido acético. Conclusiones: El fraccionamiento del extracto permitió obtener fracciones con actividad analgésica.
