• Issue: Executive functions are a recent concept, and although they have become an important neuropsychological research, actually there is a scarcity of studies that address the relationship between executive functioning, internet addiction and emotional intelligence in university contexts.
• Objective(s): The main objective of this research was to establish the relationship between executive functioning, internet addiction and emotional intelligence in university students.
• Methodology: It was based on a mixed research approach, with a sequential explanatory design. The instruments used for data collection were the Executive functions scale for university students, the Trait Meta Mood Scale, the Internet Addiction Test and the semi-structured interview. The information obtained was processed in the statistical software SPSS v.22 and ATLAS tv 9.
• Results and discussion: It was demonstrated that in the sample of university students studied there is a deficient executive functioning, which does not correlate with the high rate of Internet addiction identified. In addition, it was evidenced that there is a significant correlation between executive functioning and emotional intelligence, and in correspondence with this finding it was observed that their poor executive functioning is related to the ineffective emotional regulation strategies they present.
• Conclusions: There are significant correlations between the executive functioning of the young respondents and their level of emotional intelligence, where the level of emotional repair has a strong influence on decision making. On the other hand, there is no relationship between executive functioning and the level of Internet addiction presented by these young people.
• Problemática: Las funciones ejecutivas constituyen un concepto relativamente reciente, y aunque se han convertido en un importante eje de investigación neuropsicológica existe en la actualidad escasez de estudios que aborden la relación entre funcionamiento ejecutivo, adicción al internet e inteligencia emocional en contextos universitarios.
• Objetivo(s): La investigación tuvo como objetivo fundamental establecer la relación entre el funcionamiento ejecutivo, la adicción al internet y la inteligencia emocional en estudiantes universitarios.
• Metodología: Se sustentó en un enfoque mixto de investigación, con un diseño explicativo secuencial. Los instrumentos utilizados para la recolección de datos fueron la Executive functions scale for university students, la Trait Meta Mood Scale, el Internet Addiction Test y la entrevista semiestructurada. La información obtenida fue procesada en el software estadístico SPSS v.22 y el programa Atlas.ti v.9.
• Resultados y discusión: Se demostró que en la muestra de universitarios estudiada hay presencia de un funcionamiento ejecutivo deficiente, el cual no se correlaciona con el elevado índice de adicción al internet identificado. Además, se evidenció que existe una correlación significativa entre el funcionamiento ejecutivo y el nivel de inteligencia emocional, y en correspondencia con este hallazgo se observó que su funcionamiento ejecutivo deficiente se relaciona con las ineficaces estrategias de regulación emocional que presentan.
• Conclusiones: Existen correlaciones significativas entre el funcionamiento ejecutivo de los jóvenes encuestados y su nivel de inteligencia emocional, donde el nivel de reparación emocional posee una fuerte influencia sobre la toma de decisiones. Por otra parte, no existe relación entre el funcionamiento ejecutivo y el nivel de adicción al internet que presentaron estos jóvenes.
