A look at the Transformation of Havana's Domestic Heritage Abstract

Havana's housing fund is transforming at an accelerated rate. A good part of the transformations take place without professional supervision, which causes damages of various kinds to the built heritage, and to the cultural identity of the neighborhoods. Objective: To know how the population values and transforms their own home and to draw conclusions about the possible causes and consequences that these transformations entail. Methods: This is a qualitative research that analyzes and systematizes information from advertisements for the purchase, sale and exchange of houses in four municipalities of Havana in a period of three years. Additional information was obtained through visits and interviews. Results: The value attributes assigned by the owners to their respective homes are defined, as well as the main transformations carried out in them. Conclusions: The changes that the population makes on their homes negatively affect the built heritage. An important part of them respond not only to the need to maintain the buildings, but also to aspirations from the spiritual world of the subjects, inspired by new cultural and prestige symbols, which together with the lack of references and state control, has led to the creation of aesthetic paradigms of doubtful value, and to an evolution of the domestic heritage that denies the principles of sustainable development, and the traditions of architecture adapted to the climate.

El fondo habitacional de La Habana se transforma a ritmo acelerado. Una buena parte de las transformaciones tienen lugar sin supervisión profesional, lo que ocasiona daños de diversa índole al patrimonio edificado, y a la identidad cultural de los barrios. Objetivo: Conocer cómo la población valora y transforma su propia vivienda y extraer conclusiones sobre las posibles causas y consecuencias que estas transformaciones acarrean. Métodos: Se trata de una investigación cualitativa que analiza y sistematiza información procedente de anuncios de compra, venta y permutas de viviendas de cuatro municipios de La Habana en un período de tres años años. Se obtuvo información adicional mediante visitas y entrevistas. Resultados: Se definen los atributos de valor asignados por los propietarios a sus respectivas viviendas, así como las principales transformaciones realizadas en estas. Conclusiones: Los cambios que la población realiza sobre sus viviendas afectan negativamente el patrimonio edificado. Una parte importante de ellas responden no solo a la necesidad de mantenimiento de los inmuebles, sino también a aspiraciones provenientes del mundo espiritual de los sujetos, inspirados en nuevos símbolos culturales y de prestigio, lo que unido a la falta de referencias y de control estatal, ha conducido a la creación de paradigmas estéticos de dudosa valía, y a una evolución del patrimonio doméstico que niega los principios del desarrollo sostenible, y las tradiciones de la arquitectura adaptada al clima.
