STUDY OF JOSÉ MARTÍ'S NORTH AMERICAN SCENES, FROM A MULTICULTURAL PERSPECTIVE.

Abstract

The most current cultural anthropological studies emphasize the complex reality of cultures and societies, since we live in a multicultural society. For José Martí's work, the term multiculturalism is foreign; however, his vision of culture leads him to a deep analysis of their diversity in 19th century North American society as a consequence of immigration. All of this happens and intermingles in his North American Scenes. This study responds, then, to the need for a systemic approach to this textual corpus, about which there are few comprehensive views, and there are no references that reveal its previous treatment, from the prism in which it is proposed here. From a qualitative perspective, with the use of the bibliographic-documentary method and its technique, the bibliographic-documentary review, this first contemporary look at the work of the Apostle is offered and he declares himself as a universal intellectual, who through his journalism is interested in the coexistence of different cultures in 19th century North American society, as an expression of multiculturalism.

Resumen

Los estudios antropológicos culturales más actuales enfatizan en la realidad compleja de las culturas y sociedades, pues se vive en una sociedad multicultural. Para la obra de José Martí, el término multiculturalidad es ajeno, sin embargo, su visión de la cultura lo lleva a un profundo análisis de la diversidad de ellas en la sociedad norteamericana del siglo XIX como consecuencia de la inmigración. Todo ello se sucede y entremezcla en sus Escenas Norteamericanas. Este estudio responde entonces, a la necesidad de un acercamiento sistémico a este corpus textual, acerca del cual son pocas las miradas abarcadoras, y no constan referencias que delaten su tratamiento previo, desde el prisma en que aquí se propone. Desde una perspectiva cualitativa, con el empleo del método bibliográfico-documental y su técnica, la revisión bibliográfica-documental, se ofrece esta primera mirada contemporánea a la obra del Apóstol y se declara como un intelectual universal, que mediante su periodismo se interesa por la coexistencia de diferentes culturas en la sociedad norteamericana del siglo XIX, como expresión de multiculturalidad.
