Cuban identity and the advent of a multipolar order: background and perspectives

Abstract

• Problem: The Cuban national identity has reached the 21st century facing problems and challenges inherited from the 20th century. The most important of them is how to achieve the insertion of Cuba in a framework of international relations that neutralizes the economic influence of the US blockade, without making concessions regarding the existing political system and its founding national values.

• Objective: The objective of this paper is to assess the risks and perspectives that, for the Cuban national identity, constitute the insertion of Cuba in a multipolar global scenario, with emphasis on the opportunities offered by the emergence of the BRICS.

• Methodology: The historical, logical and analysis and synthesis methods have been used.

• Results and discussion: The main result consists in the elaboration of a debate material about the challenge that Cuba's approach to the BRICS group supposes for the Cuban national identity and its insertion in the framework of possibilities of global integration based on the multipolarity.

• Conclusions: The insertion of Cuba in a scheme of international relations based on multipolarity will lead to the Cuban national identity becoming more flexible and tolerant with respect to the individual and group identities that compose it, from the obligation to preserve a hard core of foundational national values that constitute the basis of preservation for the maintenance of the collective national identity.

Resumen

• Problemática: La identidad nacional cubana ha llegado al siglo XXI enfrentada a problemáticas y desafíos heredados del siglo XX. El más importante de ellos consiste en cómo lograr la inserción de Cuba en un marco de relaciones internacionales que neutralicen la influencia económica del bloqueo estadounidense, sin hacer concesiones en materia del sistema político existente y de sus valores nacionales fundacionales.

• Metodología: Se han empelado los métodos histórico, lógico y de análisis y síntesis.

• Resultados y discusión: El principal resultado consiste en la elaboración de un material de debate acerca del desafío que supone para la identidad nacional cubana el acercamiento de Cuba al grupo de los BRICS y su inserción en el marco de posibilidades de integración global basado en la multipolaridad.

• Conclusiones: La inserción de Cuba en un esquema de relaciones internacionales basado en la multipolaridad conducirá a que la identidad nacional cubana se vuelva más flexible y tolerante respecto a las identidades individuales y grupales que la componen, desde la obligación de preservar un núcleo duro de valores nacionales fundacionales que constituyan la base de preservación para el mantenimiento de la identidad nacional colectiva.
