Workshop 5: Network of Cuban and Latin American cultural identity studies
Abstract
An essential aspect of cultural identity is language. This is the scientific context in which the ideas are framed. Therefore, identity and language are the objective of our proposal. This paper confronts this problem, and proposes adjustments for the complex field of study of the African linguistic legacy in Cuban Spanish. Attitudes towards words of African origin reflect the positions of social groups regarding the acceptance or rejection of these legacies and their incorporation into the Cuban lexicon as part of their identity. The methodology is based on the analysis of data collected in the last 40 years under current sociolinguistics methodologies, fundamentally Moreno Fernández (1998) and Labov's variationist theory. In the discussion and analysis, non-ritual data is handled and in the analysis conclusions are reached about the link between Cuban identity and the management of Africanisms and the existing discrimination towards words linked to Cuban religions of African origin or to marginalized layers of Cuban society.
Resumen
Un aspecto esencial de la identidad cultural es la lengua. Este es el contexto científico en el que se enmarcan las ideas. Por tanto, identidad y lengua son el objetivo de nuestra propuesta. Esta ponencia enfrenta esta problemática, y propone ajustes para el complejo campo de estudio del legado lingüístico africano en el español de Cuba. Las actitudes hacia los vocablos de origen africano reflejan las posiciones de grupos sociales ante la aceptación o rechazo de estos legados y su incorporación al léxico del cubano como parte de su identidad. La metodología parte del análisis de datos recogidos en los últimos 40 años bajo metodologías de la sociolingüística actual fundamentalmente Moreno Fernández (1998) y la teoría variacionista de Labov. En la discusión y análisis se manejan datos no rituales y en el trabajo se arriban a conclusiones acerca del vínculo entre identidad cubana y manejo de africanismos y la discriminación existente hacia vocablos vinculados a religiones cubanas de origen africano o a capas marginadas de la sociedad cubana.
