Workshop 1: Theoretical, descriptive and applied studies of languages in the contemporary social context
Abstract
This paper is based on the assumptions of the "Project for the study of beliefs and attitudes towards the varieties of Spanish in the 21st century" (PRECAVES-XXI). A list is given of the main research carried out in Cuba on the subject, and some theoretical and methodological issues relevant to the proposed study are addressed. On this basis, the beliefs and attitudes expressed by a sample of young Havana residents towards the normative varieties of Spanish are analysed, with emphasis on the following aspects: the varieties to which the respondents attribute the greatest prestige, their cognitive perceptions in relation to each variety, and their evaluation of them. As a result, it is concluded that the Cuba variety is the most prestigious for young Havana residents, the one they recognise and value the most, and the one they identify the most with. Regarding the other varieties, their attitudes are generally positive.
Resumen
El presente trabajo se basa en los presupuestos del “Proyecto para el estudio de las creencias y actitudes hacia las variedades del español en el siglo XXI” (PRECAVES-XXI). Se ofrece una relación de las principales investigaciones realizadas en Cuba sobre el tema y se abordan algunas cuestiones teóricas y metodológicas relevantes al estudio propuesto. A partir de esto, se analizan las creencias y actitudes manifestadas por una muestra de jóvenes habaneros hacia las variedades normativas del español, con énfasis en los siguientes aspectos: las variedades a que atribuyen mayor prestigio los encuestados, sus percepciones cognitivas en relación con cada variedad, y la valoración que hacen de ellas. Como resultado, se concluye que la variedad cubana es la más prestigiosa para los jóvenes habaneros, la que mejor reconocen y valoran, y con la que más se identifican. Respecto a las demás variedades, sus actitudes son positivas en general.
