Samuel Feijóo: Pancho Ruta and Gil Jocuma. Originality, Utopia and Controversy

Abstract

The literary work of Samuel Feijóo is remarkably extensive, which may partly explain why it has areas and aspects that are insufficiently known and studied. Many of his prose texts have remained in his first editions. The author is recognized as a poet of high quality and of lesser significance as a novelist. Of his five novels, the best known has been Juan Quinquín en Pueblo Mocho, thanks to film and TV versions, while Pancho Ruta and Gil Jocuma has received very little attention, although it is undoubtedly a novel with merits. In general, the critical texts that create the Cuban literary canon omit them, based on anti-regionalist or anti-ruralist criteria, above all. This research is based on ideas from M. Bakhtin and M. Angenot, among others, and starts from seeing the text in dialogue with the social discourse of its time, with the aim of capturing the density of its meaning, largely latent or not stated clearly. The work, simple in its humorous and linear condition, nevertheless reveals an intense and active dialogue with the social context that is contemporary to it, designing a human ideal (its utopia); and his narrative discourse, which responds coherently to its own setting and characters, is obviously very original. The analysis affirms an unprejudiced and open approach to this unique novelistic discourse.
